| Institutions such as schools, universities, hospitals, churches and government facilities can cause water pollution in the same way that businesses and residents can generate it. The types of waste are similar to that of any home or work environment and if not disposed of or managed properly can cause adverse effects on the environment.
Activities at institutions that can affect stormwater quality include food service, automobile service, building maintenance, landscaping activities, housekeeping and other indoor/outdoor activities.
At institutional facilities, food services may wash down areas where food is constantly delivered or disposed resulting in stormwater pollution. In addition, harsh chemicals are open used on pavement and around dumpsters for sanitation purposes. Waste in dumpsters with leaks can gradually drain into streets or storm drains.
Institutional facilities are often involved in practices such maintaining lawns, managing yard debris and cleaning facilities that cause stormwater pollution.
A number of institutions, have vehicle fleets and related facilities, where vehicles are maintained or refueled and many institutions have very large parking facilities. All of these are areas where fluids and contaminents can collect and be washed off into the nearest storm drain.
Building maintenance such as painting (which is classified as a household hazardous waste), replacing filters, minor construction or other practices can generate unwanted pollutants onsite. The mismanagement of the products and the improper storage of these products can be sources of the problem.
Other hazardous wastes are used during activities such as housekeeping and only when needed. The items used include cleaners, disinfectants, construction materials, mercury containing thermometers, batteries and pesticides.
Institutional facilities generate pollution on site and can change their behaviors and practices. Best management practices (BMPs) are found under the “What Can I Do” section of this site.
